THE HUMAN TOUCH

Interview with

Christian Bothe

Christian Bothe started his career at roasting company J.J. Darboven. During his apprenticeship, he realized how diverse coffee is. “Everyone knows it, drinks it, but knows so little about where it comes from, who grows it, what a coffee plant looks like. That was the trigger for me to want to learn more about this inspiring product.” Therefore, he joined NKG in 2008 and his journey of discovery began. He started at InterAmerican Coffee in Hamburg. After 6 years at IAC Hamburg and a 3 month stay at IAC in the U.S., he had the chance to join Bernhard Rothfos in Hamburg in autumn 2014 – from trader to senior trader and recently COO. He enjoys working for NKG because very different characters, different knowledge and different strengths come together. “Friendships have developed through time that I wouldn’t want to miss”, he gratefully says. We are happy to learn more about Christian Bothe today!

“The diversity of coffee is also reflected in the diversity of the colleagues within the NKG family.”

How do you relax best after a busy day at work?

When I see my children, when I get home from work. Their laughter, their positive vibes and worry-free presence make me forget the stressful moments.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever been to?

There are all kinds of memories and gratitude for travels, countries, and people I have met in my life so far. But I must say, there is one (coffee) place that has become very special to me. The Hacienda Montecristo of the Medina family. A Coffee farm in western Honduras with a long family history. You can smell the history when you are there. You forget the world around you for a short moment. The time I was able to spend here while traveling, the many conversations about the future of coffee etc. made this place special to me.

What would you do if you won one million in the lottery?
As a father of three children, I am very touched by the lives of children. There are seriously ill children, starving children, children who have no access to education, children who are abused, etc. I would take half of the million and try to partner for the construction of a child protection home, school or similar. The other half I would invest in investment funds focused on climate and climate change.
What are you most grateful for in your life?

My wife. My children. My family. My friends. My Job. Healthiness & happiness.

How are you right now?

Which type of coffee drinker are you?

What do you think when you notice there is no coffee left before you had your first coffee in the morning?

How do you make your coffee at home (capsules, pads, filter, bean-to-cup coffee machine)?
Since I drink a lot of filter coffee in the office during the week, I drink much less at home. And when I do, I enjoy one of the great single origins from Nespresso.
What makes you laugh a lot?
My wife and my children. The kids are 6, 5 and 2 years old. It’s great to watch them together and see them growing up, and it’s fun to talk to them. The questions they ask or the comments they randomly make are at times so funny that my wife and I laugh a lot.
What would you try if you know you can only succeed?
I would become a formula 1 driver. But it would also be boring to only succeed. I like the challenge of developing the right attitude towards failure.
What is the most important thing to do on your bucket list and why?
I would drive with my family in a camper from the east to the west coast in Canada. My wife has been telling me about this childhood memory, which was so impressive for her, ever since we met. I would love to share a similar experience with our children one day.
